Camps, (In)justices, Solidarity in the Americas Conference Animation

€0.00

Commissioned Video Art Piece for the Camps, (In)justices, Solidarity in the Americas Conference - an interdisciplinary and international conference to commemorate the 20th year of the Guantanamo concentration camps and held at the University of Graz (Austria).

This piece starts from the phrase IT JUST IS, and transforms into INJUSTICE, ramifying this word, to open space to revisit what was once thought to be ‘normal’, because there is no such thing. What is perceived as normal are really internalized sets of norms. Questioning things creates space for reparation. Repair comes from the Latin 'repatriar', which means to return to a previous state, of non-breaking. And our species is the only one that can do this. How do we repair injustices?

The project’s goal was to create a visual landmark for the conference to communicate the topic and the essence of the conference with creativity and empathy using visual metaphors and point towards the opportunities revisions offer. The art piece uses transformative words, to make the viewers and attendees experience the power words have of changing the narrative weight of a word. After all, art has the capacity to translate complex ideas into more approachable messages whilst remaining graphic.
